Is HOA software secure? Here is how ours is built.
The short answer: Rebel HOA walls off each community’s books, requests, messages, votes and documents from every other community with row-level rules in the database. Only board members reach board-only records, posted books are sealed so any change shows, the community’s shared logins are encrypted, and card payments are handled by Stripe.
How each community is protected, in three layers
- Walled off by the database. The community’s books, requests, messages and votes carry rules that return them only to people in that community.
- Roles decide what you see. Residents, renters and board members each see only what their role allows.
- Sensitive steps ask again. Revealing a saved password or quickly approving an architectural request asks for the person’s PIN first.
Security is built in. Access is the board’s call.
- Who joins the community.
- Who serves on the board, and so sees board records.
- Which documents and passwords are shared, and with whom.
Changes to the books, the budget and the membership list are recorded with who made them.
Six protections built into the product
- Walled off by rules, not promises. Row-level security in the database keeps one community’s records out of another’s reach.
- Sealed books. Posted entries are sealed in a chain, and an integrity check shows whether anything was altered.
- Encrypted shared logins. The community’s passwords for utilities and vendors are encrypted, shown only after a PIN, and hidden again after 45 seconds.
- Sealed ballots, anonymous notes. A sealed ballot’s count stays hidden until the vote closes, and an anonymous note to the board stays anonymous, even to the board.
- Card payments by Stripe. Residents enter card details with Stripe, not with Rebel HOA.
- Bank connections through Plaid. The community’s bank connects through Plaid, and Rebel HOA never asks for the bank password.
Questions boards ask
Is HOA software secure?
It should wall each community’s records off from every other, keep board-only records for the board, and record who changed what. Rebel HOA builds all three into the database itself.
Can another community see our books or residents’ messages?
No. Row-level rules in the database return the books, requests, messages and votes only to people in your own community.
Are online dues payments safe?
Card payments are handled by Stripe. Residents enter their card details with Stripe, and Rebel HOA does not keep card numbers.
Who can see a resident’s anonymous note to the board?
No one, the board included. The name behind an anonymous note can be read only by the person who wrote it.
